Verticals Community Learning Center giving local students more opportunities | Helping the Helpers

William James, a Brownsville native and former NFL player, returned to his hometown and opened the center in May 2021. He heads both Verticals and its sibling nonprofit, Team Humanity, to provide educational opportunities for local students they might not receive at school.

The season typically starts in mid-May, and players are divided into two teams with games on Sundays. Younger athletes play in the first game of the day, followed by the older players. The Miracle League typically has five or six game days per season.

The academy offers two branches of study: the Summer Experience, with a program for those ages 4 to 7 and another for ages 8 to 17. There's also an after-school program during the academic year, and Pagen said participants range from age 3 to adults.

Local businesses and restaurants donate food for their boxes, including Jackson Farms in New Salem, Olive Garden, Panera Bread, Bimbo Bakeries and Mill Street Merchants. The organization also partners with 412 Food Rescue in Pittsburgh and Fayette County Community Action.
