What Pa. county has the most miles of hiking trails? | The Numbers Racket

If, like many Pennsylvanians, you’re hitting one of the many hiking trails the Keystone State has to offer, you may be wondering what areas have the most miles of trails for optimal exploration. 

Well, a new map from the Pennsylvania State Data Center in Harrisburg has the answers. 

Miles of Trails

Pennsylvania boasts 26.6 miles of trails per 100 square miles of county area, according to the data, amounting to a state total of more than 12,000 miles.

By comparison, The Appalachian Trail stretches more than 2,190 miles from Maine to Georgia. 

About 230 of those miles run through Pennsylvania. 

County-by-County Comparison

So what counties logged the most miles of trails?

Northcentral Pennsylvania counties such as Potter, Tioga, Lycoming, Clinton and Centre counties recorded more than 40 linear miles of trails per 100 square miles, according to the map. 

Additionally, counties in the northwest and southeast regions had between 30.1 to 40 miles of hiking trails per 100 square miles, including Warren and McKean counties in the northwest and York, Lancaster, Chester and Bucks counties. 

A handful of counties logged less than10 miles per 100 square miles. They include Juniata, Snyder, Montour, Columbia and Wyoming counties.
