State Rep. Kevin Boyle, D-Philadelphia, was arrested Friday for allegedly violating a protection from abuse order.
He’s been charged with breaking the order and harassment, according to a court document reviewed by the Capital-Star.
Boyle, a six-term state representative from the city’s northeast, has been dealing with personal issues in recent months.
An attorney for Boyle told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Boyle was not accused of violence, and was would receive a mental health evaluation from the District Attorney’s office. The protective order was filed by Boyle’s wife.
The Philadelphia District Attorney’s office declined to comment.
Colleagues have been tight-lipped about his condition. Democratic leadership recently stripped him of his role as the ranking Democrat on the House Finance Committee, the online news site Spotlight PA reported.
House Democratic leadership declined to comment on the move, which Boyle blamed on misinformation, according to Spotlight PA.
In a statement, House Republican leadership called for Boyle to resign and “focus on his personal health and the future well-being of those around him.”
House Democratic leadership acknowledged Boyle’s arrest in a statement but did not mention resignation.
“We understand that Rep. Boyle has been dealing with ongoing mental health challenges and we’re thankful to learn that he’s agreed to undergo evaluation and treatment,” the statement reads. “Sadly, too many families deal with these challenges shrouded by stigma or shame. Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with Rep. Boyle’s wife and two young children.”
Boyle’s constituent services would not be disrupted, Democratic leadership added, as Boyle sought help.
