Pa. Health Dept.: More than 7.6K new COVID-19 cases; More than 3.9K hospitalized

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed 7,606 new cases of COVID-19 in the commonwealth on Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to more than 1.74 million since the beginning of the pandemic.

A total of 3,939 people were hospitalized for treatment for the virus as of midday Wednesday. Of that total, 858 people were in hospital intensive care units and 498 patients were using a ventilator, according to the agency’s COVID-19 tracking website.

The Health Department confirmed 100 new fatalities attributed to the virus, bringing the statewide total to 33,521 since the start of the pandemic.

The statewide positivity rate is 12.1 percent, and 69.3 percent of Pennsylvanians 18 or older were fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
