Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro will be the keynote speaker at a Democratic Party Convention next month — in New Hampshire.
“With a key race for governor and its position as a crucial swing state in the presidential race, New Hampshire is set to play a major role in the 2024 general election,” the New Hampshire Democratic Party said in a news release.
“In Pennsylvania, we defeated extremism and showed the rest of the country what it looks like to come together behind a vision for a better future — one where we create real opportunity while defending our rights and advancing real freedom for all,” Shapiro said in a statement, referencing his decisive win over Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano, of Franklin County, last year.
He added that New Hampshire voters are facing a similar choice next November when they decide on the state’s next governor. Republican Gov. Chris Sununu said in July he would not seek a fifth term.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to speak to Granite Staters at this critical time for both New Hampshire and our nation’s future and rally with them behind Democratic candidates who, like me, believe government can be a productive force for good,” Shapiro added.
Given its first-in-the-nation primary, New Hampshire factors heavily into presidential elections, and candidates often visit the Granite State ahead of a formal presidential campaign announcement. Indeed, as the NHDP announcement noted, “every national Democratic leader in the last 50 years has spoken at a NHDP convention, attracting sitting presidents, vice presidents, potential presidential candidates, every chairman of the Democratic National Committee and other notable national leaders.”
While Shapiro’s name has been mentioned as a possible future presidential candidate, he has dismissed most questions about it.
“New Hampshire is home to the most exciting governor’s race in the nation right now, and Granite Staters are excited at the opportunity to return the corner office to responsible leadership focused on delivering for all Granite Staters,” NHDP Chairperson Ray Buckley said in a statement. “Hearing from Governor Shapiro on his record of accomplishment and success is the perfect kick off to our 2024 election efforts. ”
The 2023 NHDP Convention is slated for Sept. 30 in Bedford, N.H
