Game Commission seeks applicants for eastern Pa. commissioner

The Governor’s Advisory Council for Hunting, Fishing and Conservation is seeking “well-informed” applicants to represent several eastern Pennsylvania counties on the state Game Commission’s Board of Directors. 

The chosen commissioner will represent the newly formed District 9, which is made up of Carbon, Berks, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, and Schuylkill counties, on the now nine-member board. 

Commissioners serve four-year terms, with ability to be reappointed by the governor to serve up to two additional terms. 

In addition, commissioner posts for Districts 6,7, and 8, which respectively cover south-central Pennsylvania counties: Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder, York; northeastern counties: Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming; and southeastern counties: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia, are also currently vacant.

The Game Commission Board holds quarterly meetings and is tasked with setting hunting seasons and hours, bag limits, collecting data on state wildlife, and classifying wild birds and mammals as “threatened” or “endangered”, among other duties. 

Applicants must be a resident of the district and be “well-informed about wildlife conservation and restoration.”

“Recognizing the unique needs of the hunting, trapping, and conservation community in the Lehigh Valley and working alongside the General Assembly, Gov. Tom Wolf has created District 9 and the advisory council seeks a diverse group of applicants for the selection process of this newly created seat,” Derek Eberly, the advisory council’s director, said. “We encourage anyone interested in volunteering to serve on the board to send us a letter of intent and their professional resume for review.”

Applications are due to Eberly by Feb. 11.
